Scientology’s Narconon rehab centre removed from NHS website

Following a lengthy investigation by Guardian / Observer journalist Shanti Das, the NHS has removed Scientology’s Narconon drug rehabilitation centre from its website. It was previously listed as a care provider with contact information and address details provided, along with a link to the Care Quality Commission (CQC)’s 2016 inspection report.

Last month the Heathfield, Sussex rehab facility had their ‘good’ rating rescinded after allegations of “safeguarding failings” and “psychological abuse” were reported by The Guardian. The story made the front page on it’s Sunday sister title The Observer and triggered an investigation by the CQC, which regulates care providers.. In a statement on 1st March, a spokesperson told us they have “reviewed the status of this provider, have visited and will be writing to them to advise of our decision, in line with our legal process.”

In the exposé, Das wrote “the allegations, and evidence gathered in undercover calls, also suggest clients were admitted to the rehab despite histories of mental illness and were misled about the extent of Scientology’s influence. Yet despite attempts to raise the alarm – including 19 complaints to the CQC, the facility has not been inspected for eight years and has never been assessed to ensure it is safe.”

After contacting the CQC for comment, a spokesperson said “we have looked at the complaints we have previously received in relation to this provider, the majority of which fall outside of our regulatory remit. However, if anyone has any new information or concerns, we would always ask they share those with us.”

Narconon opened it’s Sussex branch in September 2015 but filed as dormant on 5th November 2019. Despite this it has continued providing services and was listed on the NHS website, which displayed the ‘good’ rating it was awarded by the CQC three years prior. However, in light of recent events the NHS removed the listing earlier today and it appears the program no longer appears anywhere else on the website.

Narconon continues to be listed on the CQC’s website, however two notices have been placed on their page which state “We have suspended the ratings for this service.” and “This service is currently dormant. The only part of the service provided at this location registered and regulated by CQC is the accommodation with personal care. We do not regulate the rehabilitation programme provided or judge its effectiveness.” The CQC are expected to update the listing “in due course” following the recent site visit and investigation.
